    Letter from Lucy Downing [mother] to John Winthrop Jr. dated 17 Dec 1648: "My daughter Lucie was a little geinge to be maryed to Mr. Eyers sonne, Thomas I meane, but ... nowe wee are apon an earnest motion with Mr. William Norton". [footnote: William Norton came to New England 1635 being about 25, and married, probably not long after this letter, Lucy, d/o Emanuel and Lucy Downing. William is explicitly names as "my sonn Norton" in a letter dated 23 Feb 1658/9 (ibid. p. 49).]
