The parents of William Maple are uncertain, but he is believed to have been a nephew of William Maple Sr (1738-1812). Maple biographer Telford Grant Maple thought he might be a son of Benjamin Maple III (1725-1785).

William's great grandson John Jameson Mapel (1848-1932) interviewed many Maple families during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and his notes laid the foundation for Telford Grant Maple's "Genealogical History of the Maple/Mapel Family in America".
