The spelling of John's last name was changed from Hazlewood to Hazelwood sometime in 1922-3, probably by his mother, Laura, following her divorce from William Hazlewood. John lived in Houston, Texas for approximately two-and-one-half years, then moved to San Francisco, CA with his mother to live with his Grandfather French on what is known as the "Pan-Handle" of Golden Gate Park. He was a Merchant Marine during WWII which left him with a love for the water.
