Mary was the firstborn of Frank and Delia Austin's children. Mary was helping her mother with her post office duties, one of which was to put the mail bag out for the train to catch as it passed through Fort Kent Mills. Mary would retrieve the sack that was tossed from the train. In those days the train had a mail car where the mailman actually sorted the mail and bagged it for the towns along the track. In this way, Mary and William became acquainted, he the engineer and she the beautiful girl who waited for the mail.
