1782 Surry Co. Tax List: Stephen CLAYTON Sr (North Carolina Taxpayers) COMMENT: Other CLAYTONs on the 1782 Surry Tax List were: Elizabeth (widow of William "of Surry" for minor son Jesse), Francis (unknow), John (Stephen 2's son), Mary (widow of Philip, son of William "of Surry"), Stephen [2], Wm. (probably "William of Pendleton SC", son of William of Surry).

Stephen CLAYTON Sr. died 27 Jun 1784 per the Feb 1785 Inventory submitted to the Surry Co. Court by his son and Administrator, Stephen CLAYTON, Jr. It is believed that Stephen Sr. was born around 1703 in Richmond Co. VA, son of one William CLAYTON who died in 1705, leaving an unnamed wife with sons William, Alexander and Stephen; and daughters Mary, Elizabeth and Hannah. All the girls were under age 16, and the oldest son, William, was under 17, so the father, William, must have been about 35 or 40 when he died.
