Of late years when her health began to fail, she had made her home with the Groves and with her son Earl and family, who had done all they could to brighten her stay on earth. ================================

William had tuberculosis and moved to the San Francisco, CA., area about 1870, hoping to improve his health. He returned to Iowa and decided to move his family to Minnesota where he heard the climate was drier. In 1873 he, his wife and three children went by covered wagon to Minnesota. The two older children, Alice and Walter, walked most of the way. They settled on a homestead on Elbow Lake, Steain County. They moved to Douglas County, MN. in 1877, then in 1885 they moved to Grant Co., MN. On February 1, 1889, Carrie Bailey bought the Central House Hotel in Alexandria, Minnesosta, with the help of Mila and Abraham Staats. They later sold the hotel and bought a farm in Alexandria. William always had a lot of farm machinery, tools, teams of horses and mules and raised and trained hunting dogs. His hobby was cabinet work and he was very good at it. William helped with a forest fire near Big Sand Lake, and over did it. He came home exhausted. His health continued to grow worse and he died of a hemorrhage in his lungs at 11p.m. on May 16, 1908. At the time of his death he had TB, rheumatism, volvalar heart and nephritis. Williams beloved mules were hitched to his own buggy and his casket was hauled to a memorial service which was held in a small grove of trees near their house. The casket was set on a picnic table during the service. After the service the coffin was placed back on the wagon and then hauled 8 miles to the Greenwood Cemetery in Park Rapids where he was buried.
