James and Robert Ramsey are NOT proven brothers, but are possible or probable brothers at this point. They are being placed under "Unknown Ramsey" as a place marker only. There appears to be a possible DNA match between James and Robert Ramsey at the following site:

Advanced FTDNA testing (SNP BY-4294), life circumstances, and geographical settlements has shown that James Ramsey, of North River Settlement, would not be a sibling match with Robert Ramsey of Calf Pasture. James Ramsey and wife, Margaret, came to Augusta Co., VA c.1743 under the indentureship of Capt. John Smith who leased to James Ramsey 80 acres upon rent payment of Indian Corn in order to obtain a delayed land deed transfer in 1756. Their land in the North River Settlement was in the northern most part of old Augusta County, being far removed from the Calf Pasture, and was taken into Rockingham Co., VA in 1778. (Chalkley, III, 60-61; 461; 358; 344; 411) . Robert Ramsey of Calf Pasture died in 1759 with his wife, Isabella, qualifying as admimistratrix of his estate and who had married Robert Hall (Chalkley, I, 85). Also qualifying as administrators were John Bigham and Samuel Tencher (Chalkley, III, 55). Robert Ramsey's estate was appraised twice in 1760. Once by Andrew Hamilton, James Carlile, and James Campbell and again by Robert Hall, James Given, James Hall, James Shaw, and Daniel Harrah (O'Hara) with a balance due the (Ramsey) orphans. Of the creditors, James Shaw, sold his land in Calf Pasture (lot 12) to John Ramsey (Chalkley, III, 469). There were several John Ramseys in Calf Pasture. One was killed in 1758 at the South Branch of the Potomac (Chalkley, II, 512); John Ramsey who married Margaret Crockett, widow of Robert Crockett (Chalkley, III, 455) and went to Four Mile Creek, Mecklenburg Co., NC (Chalkley, III, 592); and John Ramsey who bought 220 acres on Cowpasture which he sold to Samuel McDonald (Chalkley, III, 459).

More research is needed for this family. Please provide sources of information with any updates.

NOTE: there is MUCH inaccurate information on the early Ramsey families of Pennsylvania and Virginia on Rootsweb and Familysearch.org.
