James Hageman was the son of Marguerite Brooks and James Coghill, who died of cholera. Marguerite then married Simon Hageman, who gave the boy his name. Marguerite was the great-granddaughter of James Garrard, the second Governor of Kentucky, and Elizabeth Mountjoy. She was the daughter of James Brooks and Elizabeth Garrard. James married Helen Knapp, the daughter of Dr. Moses Lowman Knapp and Mary Jane Long. They had 3 daughters, Margaret, known as Margarita, Julia Adah, and Mary Jane, known as Juanita. Dr. Moses Knapp, after the death of his wife, opened up his practice in Cadereyta Jiménez, Mexico. Of his 5 daughters (his son had died in New Orleans) only his daughter Helen followed him to Mexico. She went with her husband and 3 girls. James Hageman was hence known as Santiago. Helen took correspondence classes in medicine and eventually took over her father’s practice. Helen retired in San Antonio and at some point was followed there by her sister Mary Jane Knapp. Both are interred in San Antonio. I have been unable to locate James’ grave. Family lore says that Helen was a most difficult woman and that he left her after moving to Mexico. Their three daughters all married Mexicans. Margarita, the youngest, married José Carreño and moved to New York. Juanita, the middle child, married Rómulo Larralde and lived in Paris and Saltillo. Julia, the eldest, married Guillermo Seguin and moved to Texas.
