His parents were John Robertson and Margaret King. Thomas married Elizabeth Wallace around 1800. They had three children: Joseph, John, and Sarah. All three of his children died on the same day. They drowned when the buggy in which they were riding overturned, as they were crossing over the Boiling Pond, near his home. Sarah's infant daughter Elizabeth Mitchell also drowned. Thomas was beside himself with grief. He buried all of them on his farm. He made all of their gravestones. He was never the same. When he died a few years later, a man named Wiley Cope, who was the son of his wife's sister, tried to obtain his vast estate by filing a falsified will with the court. But his efforts were unsuccessful. Thomas died without a will and so the court appointed some men to settled his estate. They divided his land and slaves among his eight siblings. His siblings are listed in the White County Court records as his heirs. |
