HOLMON, Dea. Thomas and Mary Palmer of Mendon, Feb. 4, 1778.
- Source:Holman, David Emory. Holmans in America, p. 11, does not identify who Mary Palmer was, nor is there any obvious record of who she might have been in Mendon or Sutton. Holman says b. ---, d. ---, then says "Samuel Curtis refused to administer the estate, probably on death of widow Feb. 7, 1794". Samuel Curtis declined on 7 Feb 1799 according to the probate file (there is no documentation of any further action on this case). One might argue this is probably a misrecording of 7 Feb 1795, but it would certainly not be 7 Feb 1794, which preceded the opening of probate and hence any need for an executor. It would be strange that no legatee would petition the court for some kind of action between when the will was proved (6 Jan 1795), until 1799, hence the thought that it may have occurred in 1795. And if one presumes 7 Feb 1795, it is well within a typical probate timeframe, and probably not indicative of the widow's death. If the date is recorded accurately, and the refusal was in 1799, then the need for action to settle the estate, and hence the need for an explicit refusal by the nominated executor could indeed have been prompted by the death of the widow. But, clearly this is speculation, and would not stand up to any kind of evidence to the contrary.
