Witnesses to the marriage were Mary Newmann and Johnathan Edwards. The minister was C. Simson of the Church of Scotland and the marriage took place at the residence of the bride in Argyle Street. Although Elizabeth would have been about 41 at this time, her age on the marriage certificate is recorded as 36. Thomas' age was given as 22 but no other records have yet been found which would indicate whether or not this was correct. Thomas' occupation was given as ship's carpenter. Although the official marriage certificate is a copy made by the minister and the original signatures do not appear, there is no indication that Elizabeth or Thomas made a mark rather than a signature, so it appears they could both write. Elizabeth and Thomas apparently had one daughter, Sarah CHAPMAN, although no record has been found of her birth or baptism. |
