Children baptized by Thomas Cartington in Hexham (per familysearch.org search in Northumberland records for 1655-1690:

  • George (26 Feb 1660)
  • Mary (6 Mar 1663/4)
  • Jane (3 Jun 1666)
  • Elizabeth (3 May 1668)
  • Alice (9 Mar 1672/3)
  • Thomas (29 Jun 1679)

The 1672/3 baptism of Alice identifies Thomas as residing in "Shire". "Shire" may refer to Hexhamshire, an area south of the town of Hexham encompassing Dalton and Whitley Chapel. Perhaps people living in that general area but outside of a particular named hamlet would be said to be living in "Shire"? The Hexham parish register entries for this time period only identify some people as being "of" or "do" a particular place. (The abbreviation "do" appears to mean "living in", perhaps a Latin abbreviation related to the word "domicile"?) In this context, it appears that identifying a person as being "of" a place signifies someone who lived outside of Hexham proper.
