Stephen and Hanora (often "Norah") McNamara emigrated from Limerick in May 1874, sailing from Queenstown on the "City of Limerick" for New York and arriving on June 2nd. By 1880 they were living at 83 Congress St and had three children. By 1890 they were living around the corner at 99 Baltic Street, where they would stay for at least the next two decades and have at least a further four children.

In 1901, Hanora's niece, Bridget Vaughan, emigrated from Limerick and joined the family. Bridget had her own residence on Patrick St by 1902. She would be followed across the Atlantic by almost all of her siblings, a chain of immigration made possible when Stephen and Hanora chose, in 1874, to venture from the old land.
