Questionable Information Found
no evidence found that this marriage happened.

No wife is mentioned in his will nor in other probate documents. No death of first wife, no marriage, no birth of an appropriate person, no death of Betty has been found. The two sources cited merely say he married Betty Carroll/Carriel with no date nor identification of the wife, nor indication if she survived him or not (apparently not). (There is no evidence the newer of the two wasn't copying from the older one.) The History of Sutton, which is cited by Mooar, does not show a second wife, a reflection that no record supports this assertion. There is mention in the History of Sutton about a Stephen Cummings who married a Betty Carriel, but this occurred in 1818. Yes, nearly a century later, but the closest match that has been located and suggesting that possibly this marriage is the result of some confusion with that one.
