Samuel Hope Martin came from North Carolina when he was 19 years old. Came to New Madrid Co. with William Canoy. Raised by William Canoy. He settled at Charleston, Mo. where a half-brother,Mr. Russell, had a son who was Hon. Joe Russell, who was a Congressman.

Samuel Hope Martin married Susan Simpson. A. B. Hunter's mother was a Nancy Lewis and she and Susan Simpson Martin were cousins to Lilbourn Lewis.

Samuel Martin/Susan Simpson were Effie's Grandparents. They were married May 25, 1848
