    Simon 3rd came to Wayne from Somers in May 1804 and took up residence with his brothers Joshua and Elias, and returned to Somers in the fall of that year. He
    apparently returned permanently a year later, as the following article of 1910 in the Jefferson Gazette indicates:

    "In 1805-06 there were three families in the township, consisting of 10 persons; and two unmarried men, Simon Fobes Jr and the boy Elias, making in all 13 (?) souls."

    Either the Gazette reporter counted the same finger twice or one of the residents had two souls; in any event this establishes the approximate date of Simon 3rd's permanent settlement.

    In the Wár of 1812 Simon served as ensign in the company of his brother, Capt. Joshua Fobes. He was a justice of the peace in Wayne for many years, and a long time
    deacon of the Congregational Church.
