- ↑ Sarah Church does not seem to be identified in readily-available secondary sources. There are some interesting connections between Sarah (Tarbell) Church, the widow of Cornelius Church, but she is generally thought to have died as his widow and not remarried.
First, although they lived in Groton, she died in Salem. There are many possible explanations for this, but obviously one is that Sarah Church married Samuel Cutler of Salem.
Second, she named in her will Samuel's son Samuel Cutler Jr., but because he married her sister's daughter. The son's marriage in 1691/92 could explain how she might come to meet Samuel Cutler of Salem.
Third, her probate is opened in both Essex and Middlesex counties. Middlesex case #4452 contains the will of Sarah Church of Groton dated "first day of July 1698", annotated "Copia Vera". No executor was named, the copy was presented to the court by Samuel Cutler ("original of w'ch is lodged in the Judge of Probate (for Essex) his office where the decds moveables were"). Samuel Cutler requested granting of the administration to James Bennett or other legatee. The only surviving witness Rebecca Preston saying under oath she saw widow Sarah Church sign the will. 18 Jul 1715: Bond of Samuel Cutler jun of Salem to administrate on will of Sarah Church sometime of Groton but dyed at Salem (record in Vol. 14:341-2, adds after "solemn refusal" of James Bennett). No other papers. Essex case #5394 appears to contain the original will of Sarah Church of Grotton, dated "fift day of July one thousand six hundred ninty and eight", and no other papers. Thus there are not many probate documents, and only two: the proving and the bond of Samuel Cutler, were written after Samuel Cutler Sr.'s marriage on 7 Jul 1698. It appears to show Sarah's name had not changed, but one wonder if these other documents merely followed the wording of the will? It would be useful to have an inventory and other documents to see if further references provide additional information but they don't seem to have been preserved or recorded.
In any event, if this is not the woman Samuel Cutler Sr. married, probably there is some connection between them.
