Samuel Black and Rosannah Wright were married in Virginia. There is no information on the birthplace of the first two children, but James was born in Kentucky. The family moved from Virginia to Kentucky was therefore between 1787 and 1794. A land grant was issued to Samuel in 1799 for 240 acres of land in Bourbon County, KY near Lexington. The grant was signed by President John Adams. (Manso Porter saw the deed in 1933 among the papers of Nancy Ann Black, deceased 1920.) Samuel owned and used a number of slaves on his farm. Before he died he set them all free, and gave 40 acres of land to one called "Uncle Tom" and his wife.
Following the death of Samuel in Kentucky, Rosannah moved to Illinois about 1831. She first lived in Cumberland County (which was then part of Coles Co.) where at least two of her children settled. Then she moved to Westville, IL where other children had settled. Samuel & Nancy Collins Black, Jr. and family came to Illinois in 1836.
