Please do NOT make changes to this page before reading information below! There are TWO Robert Ramsey's (about the same age) in early Augusta County, Virginia that many researchers have confused. Not all information presented has been proven, but there is extensive research that has been done by several Ramsey researchers in the compilation of this family. Depending upon the exact birthdates of Robert Ramsey's children, one or more may be incorrectly placed with either of Robert Ramsey's wives. Please provide sources with any updates.

Genealogy Report of Robert Ramsey and 1)Margaret Beard, 2)Margaret Moore:

Descendants of Robert Ramsey

Generation No. 1

1. ROBERT2 RAMSEY (ROBERT1) was born Abt. 1721, and died Abt. 1769 in Anson County, North Carolina. He married (1) MARGARET BEARD Abt. 1746 in Augusta County, Virginia, daughter of THOMAS BEARD and JEAN MCNUTT. She was born Bef. 1728 in Ireland/Pennsylvania, and died Bet. 1750 - 1756 in Augusta County, Virginia. He married (2) MARGARET MOORE Bef. 1757. She was born Bef. 1739, and died Bet. 1762 - May 1769.

Notes for ROBERT RAMSEY: This Robert Ramsey is known as "Robert Ramsey of Beverley Manor", and has been sometimes confused with another Robert Ramsey, known as "Robert Ramsey of the Great River of Cow Pasture" in Augusta County, Virginia. This Robert married Margaret Beard, daughter of Thomas Beard and Jean McNutt of Augusta County, VA. Robert and Margaret migrated to Anson County, North Carolina before 1762 as indicated in Augusta County, VA records, when the sold 340 acres in "Beverley Manor" to James Henry. Some researchers believe that Margaret Beard, the wife of Robert Ramsey may have died about 1754 (which seems to explain the 7-year gap between his 3rd and 4th children), and supposedly he married another Margaret (probably Margaret Moore according to some researchers), but more research is necessary to prove the second marriage.

Information from Rootsweb.com post of Lee Ramsey (e-mail: lkramsey@comcast.net):

Robert Ramsey of Beverley Manor

Robert Ramsey of Beverley Manor, Augusta County, VA married Margaret Beard. They settled in the Beverley Manor by 1742; and removed to Anson County, NC before 18 Aug 1762, which date Robert Ramsey and Margaret of Anson County, NC conveyed to James Henry 340 acres in Beverley Manor, adjacent to Samuel Huston, Robert Alexander, Patrick Hays and William Purris. This is most likely the same 340 acres that was sold to Robert Ramsey by William Beverley on October 17, 1747 in the following transaction:

Page 386.—17th October, 1747. Wm. Beverley to Robert Ramsey, £10.4.0; 340 acres in Beverley Manor; corner to Win. Roberson; to RobL Alexander and Patrick Hays; to Wm. Robinson. Teste: Robert Alexander, Jno. Fulton, Robt. Baird. Proved by Ro. Alexander and Ro. Beard, 18th November, 1747.

Robert Ramsey's mother may have been Sarah Ramsey, who was widowed by 1753, the year she conveyed 309 acres adjacent to Robert Ramsey in Beverley Manor to John Fulton. Sarah Ramsey was an early settler in the Beverley Manor, and her land deed there was recorded in Orange County, VA in 1742. Augusta County, VA was not organized until 1745. There is also the question of whether Robert Ramsey was a brother of Capt John Ramsey of Beverley Manor. John Ramsey was also in Beverley Manor by 1742 and died in Augusta County, VA in 1783. His wife, Mary, died in 1786.

Robert Ramsey's wife was Margaret Beard, the daughter of Thomas Beard, who left his will in Augusta County, VA 15 May 1769, providing a gift to Robert Ramsey and his children - "testator's grandchildren." Margaret Ramsey was not named in her father's will, inferring her death prior to May 1769. Robert Ramsey was one of the first elders of the Waxhaw Presbyterian Church, located near the mouth of the Waxhaw Creek, a tributary of the Catawba River. Robert and Margaret Ramsey's settlement in the Waxhaws was located in the far, southern end of the original Anson County, NC. The Waxhaw settlement land was taken into Mecklenburg County, NC in 1763, and later a portion fell into Union County, NC and a portion became apart of South Carolina .

The following records seems to indicate that "widow" Sarah Ramsey was probably the mother of this Robert Ramsey:

In this record, Sarah Ramsey processioned for Robert Ramsey:

These records indicate that Robert and Margaret Ramsey were in Anson County, North Carolina in 1756 and sold their land in Augusta County, VA in 1762:

McBEE's ABSTRACTS of ANSON RECORDS show: p. 216:

"William Beard of Anson, sold to ROBERT DAVIS, for 30 pounds Virginia Currency, 300 acres on Waxhaw Creek. April 24, 1756. Witnesses: John Crockett, Robert Ramsey, Repentance Townsend."

This MAY be the Robert Ramsey that received a land grant in North Carolina, in the Catawba River area in 1752:

There were 11 land grants in the Catawba River Valley in 1752: Robert Ramsey, William Robinson, Robert Ramsey, David Templeton, Thomas McHonny, Edward Griffin, James Harmer, Andrew Alllison, John Battey, Evan Lewis, and Thomas McHonny. (Source: McAfee’s & Allied Families in the Catawba River Valley)

This MAY be the Robert Ramsey that was listed as an executor of David Steele's will, but refused to execute:

Additional information from Lee Ramsey (e-mail: lkramsey@comcast.net) on this Robert Ramsey:

Jim,

This is just a quick note for explanation. It may take a few readings to pickup on some of my analysis of the family structure that is buried in the research data. I believe Sarah Ramsey was Robert Ramsey’s widowed mother and that Capt John Ramsey of Beverley Manor may be Robert’s brother. This will account for my reference to Sarah Ramsey arrival to the Beverley Manor with two possible sons. All of this is based on circumstantial evidence. I also believe that the father of Robert Ramsey was deceased before Sarah and John and Robert Ramsey arrived to Augusta Co., VA by 1742. There will be no record in Orange or Augusta Counties for the father of Robert Ramsey or the husband of Sarah Ramsey, and I know of no one who has family records for these early dates. If the father of Robert Ramsey and the husband of Sarah Ramsey had come to the Beverley Manor there would have been a land record for him, and if he had died in Augusta Co., VA, there would be an estate administration for him. These were very successful, influential Presbyterian settlers who were able to immediately establish themselves; and, only a widow woman could take up land independent of her husband.

Hi Tom, I checked in a book I have that was written by Robert Stone. Here's what it says about Robert Ramsey. "In the Augusta Parish Vestry Book (Page 17), 26 March 1748, is a notation "Processioned for Sarah Ramsey (widow) present Robert Ramsey." This is indicative that Sarah was Robert's mother. This Robert Ramsey lived in a section of Augusta Co, VA called Beverly Manor. The widowed mother, Sarah, sold her land in Beverly Manor in 1753. One of Robert's children was also named Robert, and on 18 August 1762 he and Margaret of Anson Co sold 340 acres in Beverly Manor.

One researcher made the following conclusion regarding Robert Ramsey's family:

III.2: ROBERT RAMSEY b c1721, d aft 14 Jun 1792, probably SC, md 1st c1748 to Margaret Beard, dau of Thomas Beard. Following is the analysis of Miss Nancy Crockett, a retired schoolteacher and genealogist living in Lancaster, SC:

Robert Ramsey sold property in 1756 to Moses Davis, but no wife joined him in signing deed. Deeds for property sold by Robert Ramsey before and after that date were signed as "Margaret [her X mark] Ramsey".

Thomas Beard in his will left money to "children of Robert Ramsey viz my grandchildren", 1769 Lancaster District, SC.

John Ramsey, Revolutionary War pension #S31318

"John Ramsey, the son of Robert, was born in 1758 in Craven (later Lancaster) County, South Carolina.

"While residing in said Craven County, he enlisted sometime in 1775 [1], served at various times on short tours until 1781, about ten months and three weeks in all as a private under Captains John Barclay, James Montgomery, Henry Coffee, Colonels Kershaw [2] and Davie in the South Carolina troops, and was at the siege of a Ford on Congaree, at the battle at Colonel Thompson's, at the battle of Hanging Rock and in two battles on the east side of the Catawba River. He stated that on one tour, he served as a substitute for his uncle, James Moore".

Miss Crockett concluded that Robert Ramsey m (1) Margaret Beard and (2) Margaret Moore. Probable ch of Robert Ramsey & Margaret Beard: III.2.a: Sarah Ramsey b c1749 III.2.b: William Ramsey b c1755 Probable ch of Robert Ramsey & Margaret Moore: III.2.c: John Ramsey b c1758 md Eleanor Unknown, died 1844 in Henderson Co, KY. III.2.e: James Ramsey b 1761 d c1842 Lancaster Dist, md Rosannah Unknown. Served Rev War, no pension. Three children. III.2.f: Alexander Ramsey b 1765 d 8 Sept 1855 Wayne Co, IL, md Eleanor Lynn. Served Rev War, no pension. Seven children.

Notes for MARGARET BEARD: Based upon the following posting in 1997, Margaret Beard's father MAY be Thomas Beard. More research is necessary to prove this relationship. Some researchers claim that this Margaret Beard died abt. 1754, but other evidence supports her living until at least 1762, but prior to her husband's death in 1769:

Robert Ramsey of Beverley Manor, Augusta County, VA married Margaret Beard. They settled in the Beverley Manor by 1742; and removed to Anson County, NC before 18 Aug 1762, which date Robert Ramsey and Margaret of Anson County, NC conveyed to James Henry 340 acres in Beverley Manor, adjacent to Samuel Huston, Robert Alexander, Patrick Hays and William Purris. Sarah Ramsey was an early settler in the Beverley Manor, and her land deed there was recorded in Orange County, VA in 1742. Augusta County, VA was not organized until 1745. There is also the question of whether Robert Ramsey was a brother

July 20, 1997 RAMSEY CHEROKEE ANCESTORS I have recently been told by a newly found RAMSEY cousin, that he was told we have Cherokee ancestors in our line. My mother also told me this, but had no information on who this ancestor/ancestors were. My RAMSEY line goes from ROBERT RAMSEY born about 1718 possibly in VA and his wife MARGARET BEARD born about 1739. Margaret's father was believed to have been THOMAS BEARD. Robert and Margaret's son, ALEXANDER RAMSEY was my 4 times Great Grandfather. His son, JAMES RAMSEY was my 3 times Great Grandfather. His son, ROBERT H. RAMSEY was my 2 times Great Grandfather. The migration path for my RAMSEY line goes from Augusta Co., VA to Lancaster and Craven Counties of South Carolina to Hopkins County, Kentucky-- with TN thrown in somewhere along the line--to Wayne and Effingham Counties of Illinois to the Springfield area of Missouri to Yale and Pryor, OK. I am very interested in finding out what Cherokee ancestors I may have and would appreciate hearing from anyone who has information about this! Thanks! Deborah Rupp (housnwoods@earthlink.net)

According to Directory of Scottish Settlers, 1625-1825 published 1985, Vol. V, by Dobson. A Wm. Ramsey b. 1747 emmigrated from Scotland via ship "Londenderry" from Ireland to America, Lanc. Co. Pa. in 1768. Married Elizabeth Lackey in 1771 then married Martha Ochiltree in 1796. I would be interested in knowing if you have a Delawre connection on your family tree. My g-g-grandfather Hugh Ramsey came to America. We are trying to track his to Ireland/Scotland.

According to my records, William Ramsey & his first wife, Elizabeth Lackey were married in Lancaster Co. PA in 1771. Elizabeth was buried there. Later William married Martha Ochiltree in Rockbridge Co. VA. Several of their children were born there, and others of their children were born after their move to Preble Co. OH.

William had about 15 children with these two wives and their descendants and the descendants of William's brother Hugh, were scattered in PA, VA and Ohio.

I am descended from John Ramsey, a son of William & Elizabeth, who was born in PA and later married Elizabeth Campbell in Rockbridge Co. VA. Although some of their children were born in VA, they also had a few children in Preble Co. OH, so it looks like they either moved to OH with his father, or his father followed them there. Their son, William, my gr gr grandfather was born in OH.

Although I have the lists of many of these children and grandchildren of William and his two wives, I don't seen anyone named Edmund, although it's quite possible that he could have been a grandson of either William or Hugh.

If you'd like to write to me at lonna@granbury.com, perhaps we can still compare notes.
