- ↑ The death record for daughter Lucy B. Newell, b. late 1805, names her mother as Martha. The death record for daughter Betsey Caniff, b. mid-1811, names her mother as Martha. Since these daughters are on either side of Elijah's birth, it raises a concern that his mother's name was Patty (short for Martha), not Polly as given in the VRs, a possible misreading? A death date for Martha, w. Phineas, is found in Holden in 1848, just before the father remarried, but no death record for a wife named Mary or Polly. There is a Martha Tuttle b. 6 Jul 1777 in Southborough, which is exactly one month off from the birthdate implied by the age at death (6 Aug 1777), and her parents, Joseph and Lucy Tuttle, moved first to Princeton, and then about 1800 to Holden. The marriage record (copy) appears to say Polly probably, however, the intentions clearly says Patty and is believed to be the correct name.
Deeds show Martha was his wife by 1826, but there are no relevant deeds between 1803-1826: 20 May 1826: 249:589 "Phinehas Parmenter with Martha Parmenter wife of the s'd Phinehas" of Holden convey to Samuel Daman of Holden. 12 Sep 1836: 317:426 Phinehas Parmenter and "Martha Pamenter in token of her relinquishment in right to dower" of Holden to Barney Howe of Holden. 26 Feb 1839: 339:383 Phinehas Parmenter "and Patty Parmenter his wife in token of relinquishing her right of dower" of Holden to Jacob Conant of Sterling.
Circumstantially, eldest daughter Lucy B. is probably named after mother Lucy Brewer, while eldest son Elijah is probably named after Martha's brother Elijah, who died at age 18 in 1797.
