Family:Olie Tarrant and Miriam Powell (1)

Family tradition is that Olie and Miriam originally eloped. When they returned, Miriam's mother, Iza Pearl, insisted on a "regular" marriage. I have not been successful in finding their marriage information through the Virginia Vital Records Dept., but I do have a copy of the newspaper clipping and a copy of the the page from the wedding book. Note the spelling of Olie "Olston Deterrant" in the book and "de Tarrant" in the newspaper clipping.

A newspaper clipping shows Mrs. Iza P. Powell announces the marriage of her daughter, Miss Miriam Margaret Powell, of this city, to Mr. Olie O. deTarrant, of Washington, DC, on Tuesday, March 23. The marriage took place quietly at 7:30 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Perry J. Looney, in Thirty-second Street and the ceremony was performed by Rev. C. M. Watson, pastor of the First Christian church (Disciples). During the evening Mr. and Mrs. deTarrant left for a short wedding trip, and after April 1st will make their home in Washington.

A wedding guest book signed by the minister shows: This certifies that Olie Olston Deterrent of Norfolk, VA and Miriam Margaret Powell of Norfolk, VA were by me united in Holy Matrimony at Norfolk, VA according to the ordinance of God on the 23rd day of March in the year of our Lord 1920. Chas. M. Watson, Minister.
