The family left Scotland for Thomson Falls in Kenya in 1954 as Neil had landed an engineers job with Kenya Co-operative Creameries. Living conditions were basic and dangerous as the country was in the midst of the Mau Mau uprisings against the British administration. Guns were a common sight amongst women as well as men and apparently the local hotel had the "Wild West" atmosphere. The pump house on the banks of the local river carried water to the creamery where Neil worked and it's possibile he made alterations to the workings to carry water to his own and other local houses which hadn't previously benefitted from running water. Kay commented on the rise in standard of living when the water started flowing. After 7 years, Neil changed to a new job which meant moving to a different area and with that move and subsequent transfers they moved between Nairobi, Mombasa, Dar es Salaam, back to Mombasa and finally returning to Nairobi. They returned to the UK around 1980 and lived in Uphall, West Lothian. Neil worked in London for Guinness, commuting on a weekly basis, after which they took off again, this time for Douala in Cameroun, where they stayed for a couple of years. They finally settled in Uphall, West Lothian. |
