Charlotte and Digby may have met on the S.S. De Grasse en route to Europe. They definitely departed on their honeymoon on the De Grasse; their friend Dorothy Olson wrote of seeing them off on the ship. Ever after they placed a cardboard cutout of a ship, labelled "De Grasse," on their holiday tree.

Digby was recovering from a divorce (his previous wife had been unfaithful to him with a "4F-er" while he was serving in WW2 ("4F" is a draft classification meaning "unfit for military service", so this was particularly insulting to someone who had enlisted). Charlotte had just graduated college, her bicycle was in the hold, and was going to tour Europe by bicycle with a girlfriend from college.

Upon first meeting, Digby asked her, "What tour are you with?" and she kicked him. He asked, "Why did you kick me?" and she responded, "I'll kick you again if you say something pompous."

Apparently she was reading "Diana of the Crossways" which impressed him.

Later on the voyage, he borrowed money from her, not because he needed it, but because he wanted to see her again and needed the excuse to return the funds to her.

Looking back on their meeting, he was to say, "I went to Europe to find my lost innocence, and I found a lost innocent."
