Lewis grew up in Clarksburg, Ma, Phoebe was born in Shaftsbury, Vt and lived in White Creek, New York on the family farm. At some time while Phoebe was young her family moved to Clarksburg for work. That is when she met Lewis. When she was old enough Lewis married her and then tragedy struck. While Phoebe was giving birth she died, but they saved the baby. Lewis named the child Cora, why is not known. There were no other Cora's in the family line.

The first few years the baby lived with Phoebe's parents as is reflected in the 1870 US Census. Baby Cora is mistakenly listed as 1 year old when in fact she was 2 going on 3. Two months later, in the same census taken in Clarksburg, Cora is listed living with her father and Grandmother and family. In the 1880 Census Cora is found living with her grandmother as daughter, but Lewis is not listed.

In the 1890 Civil War veterans census he is shown to have served between Oct 63 - Jan 64 and discharged on account of deafness.

Cora gets married several times and travels from place to place. Eventually she has 5 children, 2 of whom survive.

It's peculiar, in the 1900 census she is listed as having had 5 children with 2 surviving yet Alfred Shampang, Willie Shampang, and Grace Shampang are listed at her husbands step children. The math does not add up. Grace appears in 1900, and then disappears after 1900. Nothing further has been found after extensive searching for Grace.

Lewis remarries to Ella Kiney in Pittsfield, Ma which is listed as Ella's home town, and they have a child Franklin.

Lewis dies in 1917 while living at 239 Beaver Street in North Adams. He is buried in Southview beside his daughter's husband Charles Bond.

Cora is buried there also as is her last husband Joseph Allen.
