From records in Kishinev (modern day Chisinau, Moldova), Kopel ben Leib Broytman is first found in the Revision List of Dec 1848, where he is shown as age 26, a middle class widower living with his mother Khaya, age 53, widow of Leib. He appears again in the March 1859 Revision List as age 37, living with wife Beyla, age 35.

From records in Kishinev (modern day Chisinau, Moldova), we see that Kopel Broytman son of Leib married Leyza daughter of Itsko in 1862, and that they had a son Leib Yitzchak on 31 Dec 1864. (Note that Leib Yitchak seems to be named after both his grandfathers.) (This is Kopel's third wife?)

Kopel Broytman son of Leib has another son Avraham Chaim on 15 Sept 1868, although the mother is shown as Brana. So perhaps Leytsa has passed away and Kopel has another wife? (His fourth wife?!) Also, perhaps Avraham dies young, as Leib Yitzchak was said to be orphaned and alone at a young age.

When Leib Yitzchak (later Louis Brautman) is in New York, his marriage certificate lists his parents as Koppel Brautman and Rachel Sperberg. Was Rachel the Hebrew name for Leytsa? And was her maiden surname Sperberg? I have found no records in Kishinev to confirm this. Also, on Louis Brautman's grave, the Hebrew inscription has him as "Leib Yitzchak ben David haLevi". Was Kopel's Hebrew name David? (Although Kopel is usually a diminutive form of Jacob.) Was he a Levite?
