- According to Whitney Research Group there are two "putative" cousins named Josiah Whitney that frequently get confused (the one probably a Whiting, not Whitney). Their description of Josiah's residences, however, sounds like they, too, may be confused. In one breath, they say he was in Westford in 1727, but in the next that in 1719 had moved to Willington, CT. And yet the births of children are recorded in Chelmsford as late as 1727. Meanwhile Samuel Smith's notes in the Records of Littleton say Josiah Whitney lived on the Chelmsford line and later moved to Hardwick.
There are no signs of Josiah Whitney in the VRs of Littleton, Hardwick or Westford. Perhaps he only bought land in Willington in 1719, or perhaps this is a typo for 1729, but Barbour records in Willington don't show anything until 1737, when children Peter and Meriam die, and Josiah Jr. marries. There appear to be marriages of his children Benjamin, Eleanor and Eunice there, accounting for all children except Martha, of whom nothing is known beyond her birth. Further, his wife Meriam d. Willington 26 Jan 1750/51 and he dies there 19 Nov 1766.
