  2. Source:Leonard, Ermina Newton. Newton Genealogy, p. 74, makes a very good argument to suggest the marriage record was misrecorded, noting how the given names match the adjacent record, and saying that the children's birth in Southborough are for Joshua and Mercy, and she could find no Nathaniel Newton who married a Mary Temple.

At the same time, Source:Temple, Levi Daniel. Some Temple Pedigrees, a Genealogy of the Known Descendants of Abraham Temple, Who Settled in Salem, Mass. in 1636 proposes a second marriage to Mary Temple when she was already married to William Harris and died as Mary Harris, because it took this record literally. Mercy is the daughter given a married name of Newton in her father's will, and her place in the father's list of children suggests a birth between 1704 and 1708, making her likely the "Mary Temple" who married Mr. Newton in Lancaster in 1729.
