In his autobiography James Henry Foss their grandson discusses how his father, Joshua Nathan Foss, moved to the rural area around Charleston, Penobscot, Maine where the family can be found in the 1830 and 1840 census. Life and transportation were difficult and they finally sought shelter in Essex County, MA where they are found by 1850 first at Newbury and finally at Rowley. I have ordered all the original records from the towns around Charleston, Penobscot, Maine and I am still reviewing them for more clues. There was a "Foss" estate in the area which may have been theirs. Joshua Foss is buried in Saint Albans, Somerset, Maine not far from Charleston, Penobscot, Maine. I have not found the burial for his wife yet.
