Identity of Wife

The second wife of Joseph Vaughn, "Mrs Mercy Fuller" is the widow of Jabez Fuller who died about 1712. Often she is identified as Mercy Wood, the daughter of Samuel and Rebecca Wood. For example, see Descendants of George Vaughan and others. Source:History of the town of Middleboro, Massachusetts, p. 63, does not show a Mercy in this family, listing only the children: Ephraim, Samuel, Rebecca, Anne and Jabez. Presumably, the fact that Jabez Wood, Samuel Wood's son, married Mercy Fuller, Jabez Fuller's daughter, has contributed to the confusion here.

In Source:New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, p. 36:33 (books.google.com), Homer Brainard says the wife of Jabez Fuller was Mary Hallett, d/o Joseph and Elizabeth (Gorham) Hallett. Unfortunately, specific proof is not given. Although, the wedding record refers to Mrs Mercy Fuller, the estate settlement quoted there refers to "widow Mary Fuller, relict of the said deceased", Mary and Mercy often being used interchangeably in colonial times. --Jrich 17:47, 17 February 2009 (EST)
