- ↑ The record of their marriage and the births of the three apparently oldest children are found in Lancaster VRs in the section of records "from sundry sources supposed reliable", and they are incompatible, showing two children born before their marriage??? The first such child, Gershom, is not named in his father's will and matches the age at death of the son of a different couple, so apparently was placed in the wrong family. The second son was named in Joseph's will but his age at death suggests his birth was misrecorded, and the age at death moves it to a more proper date after the parents marriage. There is also a third child, Nathaniel, recorded in Lancaster in 1696, who, like Ebenezer, is named in his father's will ("my two Sons Nathaniel Houghton & Ebenezer Houghton", the order of naming suggesting Nathaniel is older), and while the Lancaster information hasn't been confirmed, there is no obvious discrepancy.
