- Source:Stearns, Ezra S. Genealogical and Family History of the State of New Hampshire, Vol. 2, p. 453, says this Joseph "married Sprague, daughter of Phineas Sprague". This source appears to have no credibility, making misstatements about the father (alive in 1798 when died in 1758), but besides that, the wife's name is indicated as Sarah, not Sprague, in birth records of the children, and Phineas Sprague does not appear to have had any appropriate daughter (his eldest daughter Hannah, b. 1749, d. 1752, and his next daughter, also Hannah, b. 1757, would be too young to be having children in 1772) according to the recorded Malden VRs.
