- ↑ Record of an account book kept by husband Jonathan Wells may be found NEHGR, Vol. 86, p. 454. It does not list a marriage date, but Jonathan gives his own birthdate, 13 Apr 1718, which identifies him as Jonathan Wells of Colchester.
Secondary sources have various identifications of Jonathan Wells that appears fatuous or partially wrong. Source:Sheldon, George. History of Deerfield, Massachusetts, Vol. 2, p. 359, identifies Jonathan as s/o Ebenezer of Hatfield, who settled in Roadtown (see wikipedia:Shutesbury, Massachusetts#History]) then moved to Deerfield about 1754. (The parentage appears refuted by the account book, but the lack of birth records for early children is consistent with a residence in Roadtown, since no records exists for Shutesbury at that period - but do for various alternate locations discussed below arguing that the alternates are wrong. The last three children in the account book, born 1752, 1754, and 1756, are found in Deerfield records, indicating he moved to Deerfield about 1752.) Source:Wells, Daniel White. History of Hatfield, Massachusetts, p. 390, and Source:Judd, Sylvester. History of Hadley (Massachusetts), p. 478, says Abigail married Jonathan Wells of Belchertown. The basis for this has not been found, and no supporting record has been found.
A Rootsweb page that appears informed about the account book, gives the marriage as Feb 1740/1. Where this date comes from is a mystery and no such record has been found. Later the same webpage says they were married 28 Mar 1744 in Colchester, which is after the birth of their first child and not found in Colchester records. Further the births of children are placed in Colchester, even ones recorded in Deerfield. None of the births are actually found in Colchester records, and there is little reason to think any of the events of Jonathan's married life occurred in Colchester, suggesting the accident of finding a useful source has not resulted in a reliable presentation here.
