- ↑ This page is based on Source:Gordon, George A. Butterfields of Middlesex which says Jonathan had a first wife Elizabeth who died early leaving one child. It appears this error-filled source made two more errors in this one statement.
1) There is no birth record for Elizabeth naming her mother, and Jonathan's will identifies daughter Elizabeth as a child of his first wife, but never names her. His son David has a birth record, and his mother is named as Jane. Unless one want to propose that Jonathan had three wives (which seems unlikely since Jonathan's will caller Elizabeth's mother his first wife), it seems more likely that Elizabeth's mother was named Jane. Gordon appears to have assumed her name based on her daughter's name.
2) The second error is assuming Elizabeth was the only child of this wife. That he gave his son David to his brother Samuel, as his will states, would be very typical of disposing of the child of an earlier wife either because he is unable to care for him before remarrying, or as a result of acquiring a second wife. This combined with David's early birth date (1702 according to VR's and Gordon, both), makes it almost certain that David was a child of the first wife, as well.
