John and Elvira lived in Union and Cumberland Counties, South Carolina. John and his son James and their families were the first settlers in Richmond, Indiana, in Wayne County in 1807.

John died when he was 90 years old.

Elvira released a slave who became a U. S. senator. She was honored as the oldest living widow of a Revolutionary War soldier in 1868.

She died at the age of 102.
