This family group was identified primarily due to the fact that Louisa Thomas, aged 18, born St Bride's Major, was listed on the 1871 census as a niece in the household of Phillip Llewellyn and his wife Catherine.

Catherine's birthplace is known to be Wick based on census records and her year of birth is definitively 1800 as she was interred in the Llewellyn family plot in the Parish Church of St. Bridget, St. Bride's Major, on 7 November 1871, aged 71. A Catherine Thomas, daughter of John and Ann, was baptized in Wick, with her brother Thomas, on 11 May 1800.

Louisa, aged 8, born St. Bride's Major, is found living with her widowed father David, elder sister Alice (21) and brother John (13) on the 1861 census. David and his wife Sarah and their six children, including eldest daughter Mary (14), Alice (12), and John (4) are on the 1851 census for St. Bride's and there is an appropriate matching 1836 marriage record for David Thomas and Sarah Davies in St. Bride's. David's birthplace varies on the 1851 and 1861 census from Monknash to Wick (the two villages are a kilometer apart). A David Thomas, son of John and Ann, was baptized in Monknash on 22 September 1811.

Circumstantial evidence is strong. If there are no other Catherines born 1800 in Wick it would be very strong. Determining if Phillip Llewellyn also had a niece named Louisa Thomas would reduce certainty, although given that Louisa's mother must be Sarah Davies, that seems unlikely and there is only one Louisa Thomas on the 1861 census that neatly fits the characteristics of the one on the 1871 census in the household of Phillip and Catherine Llewellyn.
