  2. The Find A Grave memorial for John shows three children. Two are born in Vermont after the death of John's 2nd wife and before his marriage to his 3rd wife. Both are born in Peacham, VT, according to their memorial pages. According to the death record of Lyman Thayer his parents were John Thayer and Hannah Smith, so this appears blatantly incorrect.

The memorial of John Alexander Thayer -without any gravestone image to lend credibility- indicates he was buried in the same cemetery, b. Peacham, VT, 16 Dec 1817, d. 12 Nov 1881. No such death record is found. The text says he did not move to Keene until 1866, and his parents are given as John Thayer and Hannah Blake. While his birth location is listed as Vermont, it is listed as New Hampshire in the 1870 census and 1880 census (1860 not found). There is a Cheshire probate file (T-523) for John A. Thayer which leaves everything to wife Fanny, apparently having no children, nor are his parents indicated. The will was dated 15 Jun 1881, proved 18 Nov 1881.

The memorial for John's wife Fanny links to a different memorial for John A Thayer. This has an actual gravestone image, JOHN A. THAYER, b. 31 Dec 1817, died 12 Nov 1881. The text of this memorial says John moved to Keene in 1866 but does not identify his parents.

The situation is confused by a familysearch index for John Adams Thayer that points to the John Alexander Thayer memorial. There is a death record for this John A. Thayer who d. Somerville, MA, in 1895, buried Quincy, whose birth is in Peacham, VT, in Dec 1817 by his age at death (parents unknown). It is guessed that this memorial, perhaps once correct for John Adams Thayer, was co-opted for John A. Thayer of Keene, and now serves neither.

In any event, it is not believed that the John Thayer who married 1857 Fanny Snow, belongs to these parents.

The third asserted child, Asa C. Thayer, does appear to belong, his age at death placing his birth after the marriage to Sally, and the gravestone naming his parents as John & Sally Thayer. The gravestone is labeled "Brother", so he appears to have never married, and as documented on his page, appears to have lived with his sister Sarah (Thayer) Joslin.
