Family:John Stephenson and Sarah Waite (1)

This was one of the First Families of Early Orange/Augusta County, Virginia [[1]]

On 22 May 1740 he made oath in court that he had imported himself, wife Sarah (nee Waite), and daughter *Mary (m. Archibald Houston) from Ireland to Philadelphia, and thence to this colony" (now Rockingham Co, VA).

   Date: 13th October, 1777 John Stephenson's will, probated in Rockingham 23rd November, 1778; wife. Devisees, Jonathan Taylor and Easter Taylor, two of wife's children (infants). Daughter, Mary Huston, Widow of Archd. Huston. Grandsons Jno. Huston, Stephen Huston, George Huston, and Nathan Huston. Grand children, Ann, Abigail, Sarah, Jane, Elizabeth and Archibald Huston, (infants), daughter Mary Huston.

   The Stephensons were in Donegal from about 1732, when John Stephenson came. Nathaniel Stephenson took up a tract of 300 acres adjoining the Donegal glebe in 1738. His land passed eventually to the Camcrons, and John Stephenson removed to Virginia. John and Nathaniel were sons of James, and they apparently preceded him to America. James Stephenson did not take up land near Donegal glebe until 1740, and did not receive patent until 1749. It passed to Nathaniel, who died without issue; but his sister Hannah, who had married into the Watson family, had a son, David Watson, and to this nephew of Nathaniel Stephenson the land went in 1780. David Watson was a prominent patriot, and a justice of the Court of Common Pleas. One of his sons was a colonel of militia during the War of 1812; two grandsons became physicians, David C. and Nathaniel, both having large Donegal practices; and James C., who was born in the old homestead adjoining the Donegal meeting-house, eventually entering the Presbyterian ministry, and becoming doctor of divinity in 1847.

   In his old age David Stephenson went to Chester Co,S.C. to live with his daughter Anne Adair
   
   David Stephenson is believed to be the David Stephenson who shows up on church records in Old Augusta County, VA, now Rockbridge Co, VA.
   
   John Stephenson, possibly from old Augusta Co VA, settled on nearby Bullocks Creek in York County, SC.
   
   John Stephenson from Ulster, Ireland, emigrated to Philadelphia then proceeded into the Shennandoah Valley.

   Did Rev. John Hindman who came from Londonderry, N. Ireland and was preaching in the Rockingham Co. VA area emigrate on the same ship, possibly with Huston / Houston and Adair / Adare families ?
