Genealogy Report of John Smith and Phoebe Mayfield:
1. JOHN2 SMITH (EDWARD1) was born Bet. 1757 - 1764 in prob. Culpepper County, Virginia, and died 1805. He married PHOEBE MAYFIELD 22 Jan 1782 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. She was born Bef. 1764. Notes for JOHN SMITH: From "Tennessee Smithology" by Emma Barrett Reeves: John Smith received two North Carolina land grants in Tennessee. Bk. I, p. 261, and Bk. I, p. 264, dated 13 Oct. 1783. In 1790 he pays tax on 200 acres, as well as poll tax. In 1793, he pays poll tax but no land tax. In 1794 he pays poll tax and tax on 50 acres, the same in 1795; in 1796 his name is listed but with no entries. He had been called on to help with the road work each year through 1795, but not after that. We may infer that he was in poor health and his land tax may have been excused. He predeceased his father and all his family, having died before Edward's Will was drawn. His widow, Phoebe seems to have gone to central Tennessee along with others of her clan. She appears in the 1820 Census of White County with 1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-26; 1 female under 10, 1 female 16-26, and herself over 45. Notes for PHOEBE MAYFIELD: Clues to parentage:
