Ellen and John were married according to the rites of the Catholic church. Ellen's age was given as 18, but according to the age on her death certificate she would have been only 15. This is probably correct, as her parents were married in 1841. John could sign his own name, but Ellen made her mark.

It appears that Ellen and John separated sometime between the birth of their fourth child in 1869 and 1874.
