Will of John Holbrook dated 12 Jul 1699 mentions wife Mary and her daughter Loring [Suffolk Probate 14:111]. Mary Jacob, d/o Richard [sic, but no daughter Mary listed for Richard or named in his will (p. 2:4:31) so apparently an editing error, and meant Nicholas who names Mary Otis in his will (p. 1:1069)], m. John Otis Jr. and had a daughter Elizabeth who m. (1) Thomas Allyn, m. (2) 20 Jul 1699 [sic, Anderson relied on Savage for this date. It is incorrect, making unnecessary Anderson's concern that the will mentioned the married name of daughter Loring before the marriage] David Loring.

  2. Source:Chamberlain, George Walter. History of Weymouth, Massachusetts, p. 3:268, identifies John Holbrook's third wife as Mary White. This appears to be based on p. 4:732, where the will of Thomas White [#3], dated 1706, mentions daughter Mary Holbrook and so daughter Mary is shown by Chamberlain as the third wife of Capt. John Holbrook. However, based on her age, this would have probably had to have been her first marriage, and thus she would have had no daughter Loring as mentioned in John's will. Rather, Thomas White's daughter may be the Mary who was second wife of Thomas Holbrook of Medfield whose 1717 will gave his widow Mary the lands in Weymouth she brought with her.

Source:Vinton, John Adams. Vinton Memorial, Comprising a Genealogy of the Descendants of John Vinton of Lynn, 1648, p. 331, identifies the third wife as "widow Mary Loring", clearly assuming the daughter was unmarried. Since no such daughter Mary with mother Mary Loring has been identified, it would seem Vinton was assuming all this, but forgot to inform the reader of that.

The identification of John's third wife as Mary (Jacobs) Otis also appears to be based on John's mention of a daughter Loring. This identification satisfies that, since Mary's daughter Elizabeth Otis m. (1) Thomas Allyne, m. (2) 30 Jan 1699 David Loring, just months before the will was written.
