Genealogy Report and Notes for John Hogshead and Nancy Wallace:
1. JOHN1 HOGSHEAD was born WFT Est. 1685-1690 in prob. Scotland1, and died 02 Jan 1756 in Augusta County, Virginia1. He married NANCY WALLACE. She was born WFT Est. 1685-1689 in Possibly Ireland1, and died Bef. 1756 in Augusta County, Virginia1. Notes for JOHN HOGSHEAD: From: James Cathey (c1685) of Ulster, Ireland, Cecil Co, MD, Chester Co, PA, Augusta Co, VA and Rowan Co, NC (http://www.martygrant.com/gen/cathey/cathey-james-rowan.htm) The first record I have for James Cathey is a Cecil County, Maryland deed dated 5 Dec 1724 where James Cathey of Chester Co, PA sold 75 acres to John Hogshead of Cecil Co, MD. I don’t know when exactly James acquired this land, but the deed history included in the deed started in 1719, so he must have acquired it between 1719 and 1724. ("The Cathey Family History and Genealogy, Volume I (1700-1900)", 1993 page 296).
From "Brief History of Kerr's and Kin, 1730-1930", by Vincent Brown Kerr, pub. 1930, Augusta County, Virginia, pg. 19: The Hogsheads are descendants of John Hogshead, who came from Pennsylvania to Virginia in 1729, and had sons, James and John, and James' son James was father of Elizabeth Hogsett Kerr.

John Hogshead emigrated to PA with his wife c1720, where they lived until they rai sed their family of eight children. In the fall of 1739, James Hogshead , the eldest son, went to Augusta Co., VA and entered two tracts of lan d, about 400 acres each, one in his own name and one in his father's na me. The one he entered in his father's name is situated on Elk's Run in t he northwestern part of the county, about 10 miles from Staunton (it wa s owned in 1887 by Amic Kerricoff). In the spring of 1740, John Hogshead, the father, with his family emigr ated to Augusta Co. (just two years after the county was organized) and s ettled on the tract his son entered for him on Elk's Run and lived ther e about 16 years. We have no record of the death of his wife, of their m arriage, or the birth of their children. Mr. Everett Hogshead, of Huntington, W.VA says that the family was orig inally French, spelled HOGSETTE. They were French Huguenots and driven o ut of France at the time of the Huguenot Rebellion. They went to Northe rn Ireland and there intermarried with the Scotch and Irish. They came t o America as Scotch-Irish and settled first in PA. There is a branch of t he family in eastern PA that still spells their name HOGSETTE. Another b ranch, in Augusta Co., VA, Anglicized the name to HOGSHEAD. The wills, deeds, etc. for the first American HOGSHEADs may be found at t he Augusta County Courthouse at Staunton, VA. Other references are in t he 3 Vol. set "Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in VA - Record s of Augusta Co., VA, 1744-1800," by Lyman Chalkley. A brief sketch of t he Hogshead family can also be found in "A History of Monroe County, W. VA," by Oren F. Morton, 1916, p.355. Both books are in the DAR Library. T he military service of early Hogshead men is listed in "Historical Regi ster of Virginians in the Revolution" by John J. Gwathmey, 1938, p.384. HOGSHEADs were noted for their industry, intelligence and integrity. 1 Birth: ABT 1685 in Scotland Death: 2 JAN 1756 in Augusta Co., Virginia Event: Will Proved Dec 1756 Will Book 2 p 162 Augusta County , Virginia Note: Remarks: John Hogshead's will - Son,James; son, John, the bark house an d tan yard and 2 acres of meadow joining Robert Gilkeson's line; son, D avis; son, Michael; daughter, Rebecca Hogshead; to grandson, William Al len. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jeant_5&id=I951 Name: James Bell Given Name: James Surname: Bell Suffix: {LG} Sex: M Note: "He is said to have been a school teacher, and also a surveyor and scri vener." He was not the magistrate in Augusta Co., contrary to published account s. (See BELL analysis.) Staunton Spectator, 24 Mar 1874, p. 1 The Bells of Long Glade. Mr. Editor -- When Death comes and robs us of the pet, the i dol, the loved one of the household, on whom the aged father looks as t he aid and support of his declining years, and fond and loving sisters c ling to, as the object worthy of their pure unselfish love, truly do we r ealize the force of the language -- inscrutable are the ways of Prov idence. This cold wintry day, (13th inst.,) have we put away in Mo ssy Creek Church-yard, all that is mortal of James Alexander, the last s urviving son of James Bell, Jr. The oldest boy, Thomas M., by whose si de James sleeps, was laid there in 1863, from the result of a wound rec eived in the battle of Chancellorsville. James received a most serious w ound in the battle of Kernstown, as a member of the Stonewall brigade, t o which his brother belonged. From this, he seemed to have recovered, b ecame quite robust, and had a promise of long life. Eighteen months ag o, there appeared a change, numerous physicians were consulted -- no tw o agreed as to the character of his disease, when on the evening of the 1 1th, he died, causing grief to an aged father, five fond sisters, and n umerous relatives and friends, because he was much beloved, as he deser ved to be. "Where thou art gone, Adieus and farewells are a sound unknown, And when I meet thee on that peaceful shore, The parting word shall pas s my lips no more." As the procession passed on towards the "Glade," we neared the old sto ne house, the first erected on that steam, in the far distant pa st, between 1730 and 1740, by James Bell, the great-grandfather of the d eceased. He came, a young man, from the North of Ireland, at a time th at tried men's souls, and did his part as a good man and true, in openi ng up this country, and defending the lives of his family and neighbors f rom the Indians. They made a number of incursions through North river G ap, on the settlements then in their infancy, on Mossy Creek, the Glade , Naked Creek and Middle River. At one time when they approached his h ouse, besides his own family, some of the neighbors had come in for pro tection, and destitute of arms, they escaped an attack, in providing th emselves with sticks about the length of guns and pretended to load, ma rching around, with them at a shoulder. -- James Bell was a man of res pectable education for that day, taught school, and acted as scrivener, p reparing deeds and other papers for his neighbors. He married a Miss H ogsett, a sister of Michael, who lived where George Dunlap now does. H e had five sons, John, Francis, William, David and Thomas. William was k illed, perhaps, at the battle of Point Pleasant. John served through a g reat part of the Revolution. He built the Stone house in which Jacob S chrenkhise lives, was married three times, but had no children except b y the last wife. The late James R. Bell, and his son, James Brownlee B ell, were son and grandson of John. Capt. David Bell left two sons, Ja s. Bell, Sr., and John Bell, both living, and one daughter, the wife of M r. Bethuel Herring, some years deceased. Francis Bell died without iss ue, in possession of the old paternal mansion, referred to. Thomas Bel l left three sons, James Bell, Jr., father of James A., whose death we t his day mourn, Alex. R. Bell and Capt. Sam'l Bell, and one daughter, th e late Mrs. Ebenezer Christian. Of this family of Bells of the Long Glade, it may be said, that in all t hey have expended in litigation, from the days of their ancestor to the p resent time, would not clothe a lawyer comfortably for one year. Hones t, industrious, peaceable, respected, and ready as good citizens to do t heir whole duty in meeting any calls their country made upon them. Res iding within the limits of what was known as the Mt. Solon magisterial d istrict, before the war, which manifested its patriotism as no other d istrict of the same extent did in the State, by a loss of over one h undred and fifty of its young men. -- This Bell family is entitled to t he highest place on THE ROLL OF HONOR as having sent more of its sons into the Confederate army than any othe r the writer has any knowledge of. James Bell, Sr., sent six, t hree only survived. His brother John sent five and lost two. J as. Bell, Jr. sent two -- lost one, the other badly wounded. Alex'r R. B ell sent three, lost one, and James R. Bell and son, J. Brownlee, were b oth sacrificed in the service of their country. Who will dare to say t his family did not do its whole duty? Such facts as these, Mr. Editor, m ake up the history of the country, and it is the part of our Historical S ociety to preserve them.
