John2 Gilman, son of Edward1 as above, married 3 Jun 1657 [sic, see comments elsewhere[1]], Elizabeth, daughter of James and Catherine (Shapleigh) Treworgie (sometimes Trewerthy), and granddaughter of the emigrant Alexander Shapleigh, of Kettery, Me. (See "Shapleigh" note to Eunice4 (1539) Wentworth.) She was born in 1639, died 8 September 1719. He was an ancestor of the author of this work [Wentworth[1]]. He was appointed Counsellor in 1680, and was frequently Delegate from Exeter in the N.H. Assembly, of which he was Speaker in 1693. He died 24 July 1708. They had:

1. Mary3 Gilman, born 10 September 1658; married, 26 July 1677, Capt. Jonathan Thing, of Exeter, N.H., and died August 1691. Among their children were, ___ Jonathan4 Thing, who married (as above) Abigail4, daughter of Edward3 and Abigail (Maverick) Gilman; John4 Thing, whose daughter Mary3 Think married, 1st, John4 Gilman (son of Hon. Nicholas3 Gilman, and grandson of John2 Gilman), and 2d, his cousin Hon. Peter4 Gilman (son of John3 Gilman) who afterwards was the fourth husband of Dorothy4 (104) Sherburne (whom see); and Bartholomew4 Thing, whose daughter Mary5 Thing married Rev. Nicholas5 Gilman, brother to the wife of Col. John4 (160) Wentworth.
2. James3 Gilman, born 6 February 1659-60.
3. Elizabeth3 Gilman, born 16 August 1661.
4. John3 Gilman, born 6 October 1663.
5. Catherine3 Gilman, born 17 March 1664-5.
6. Sarah3 Gilman, born 25 February 1666-7; married, 24 December 1684, Stephen Dudley, son of Rev. Samuel Dudley, of Exeter, and grandson of Gov. Thomas Dudley.
7. Lydia3 Gilman, born 12 December 1668; married Capt. John White, of Haverhill, Mass.
8. Samuel3 Gilman, born 30 March 1671, died 9 August 1691.
9. Nicholas3 Gilman, born 26 December 1672, of whom see below.
10. Abigail3 Gilman, born 3 November 1674; married, 8 July 1696, Samuel Thing, son of Jonathan and Joanna Thing, and died 7 November 1725. Among their twelve children were: Joanna4 Thing, who married Andrew4 Gilman, son of Jeremiah3 and Mary (Wiggin) Gilman as above; Elizabeth4 Thing, who married Benjamin4 Gilman; and Deborah4 Thing, who married Capt. Israel4 Gilman, the husbands of these three last mentioned being brothers. See "Moses2 Gilman" above, and see "Thing" note as above.
11 John3 Gilman, born 19 January 1676-7; married, 1st, Elizabeth, daughter of Lieut. Peter and Abigail (Starbuck) Coffin, of Dover, N.H., who died 10 July 1720, having had seven children; 2d, Elizabeth, daughter of Nathaniel Clark, of Newbury, Mass, and widow of Dr. Robert Hale, of Beverly, Mass., by whom he had four children. He had eleven children; the first three were:
1. Joanna4 Gilman, born 10 September 1700.
2. Elizabeth4 Gilman, born 5 February 1701-2, who married the son of her father's second wife, viz. Col Robert Hale, who commanded a regiment under Gen William Pepperell at Louisburg in 1745.
3. Peter4 Gilman, born 6 February 1703-4; was Brigadier-General, Counsellor from 1771, and Speaker of the Assembly for several years under the Provincial Government. He married, 1st, 8 December 1724, Mary5 daughter of John4 Thing, and granddaughter of Capt. Jonathan and Mary3 (Gilman) Thing, and widow of his cousin John4 Gilman (son of Hon. Nicholas3 Gilman); 2d, Dorothy4 (104)(Sherburne)(Rymes)(Rogers), widow of Rev. John Taylor, of Milton, Mass.; she died 25 January 1761, and he married, 3d, Jane (Bethune), widow of Dr. Moses Prince, who survived him and died 9 March 1795. He died 1 December 1788. He had, by his first or third wife:
1. Mehitable5 Gilman, married Dr. John Giddings.
2. Mary5 Gilman, married Major Daniel Tilton.
3. Abigail5 Gilman, married, 1st, 6 December 1750, Rev. John Strong, of Portsmouth, N.H., who died childless 23, October 1755; 2d, Rev. Woodbridge Odlin, of Exeter, N.H., who died 10 March 1776, and had Dudley6 Odlin, Woodbridge6 Odlin, Peter6 Odlin, John 6 Odlin, Elizabeth6 Odlin, Abigail6 Odlin (first wife of Hon. Nathaniel6 Gilman, as see below), Mary Ann6 Odlin, and Charlotte6 Odlin.

14. Joseph3 Gilman, born 28 October 1680.

    Note: Wentworth (publ. 1878) reports the marriage date as 3 Jun 1657. This date was also reported by Source:Stackpole, Everett Schermerhorn. Old Kittery and Her Families, p. 780 (publ. 1903), but differs from the 30 Jun 1657, which comes from the town registers as reported by BellS2 (1888) or from NEHGR, p. 95:182 (1941, "Alexander Shapleigh and Some of His Descendants" by Ralph Bartlett).
