The biography of their son-in-law Charles Holmes says: “The marriage of our subject to Miss Mary Coats took place on Pigeon Prairie, Nov. 10, 1842. She was a daughter of John and Ellen (Romans) Coats, who were among the earliest pioneers of Pigeon Prairie, entering land there in 1829. They built up a comfortable home in which they spent the remainder of their lives. They had eight children, of whom Mrs. Holmes was the fourth, her birth taking place in Yorkshire, England, Sept. 17, 1816.”
