John Chestnut served in the American Revolution from August Co, VA. DAR ancestor number A021459. Documented by Augusta Co, Virginia order book 17, pp. 419 and 420. Served as a juror 21 Aug 1782, which also qualifies him as a Patriot of the American Revolution. He was a private.

The "HISTORY OF LAWRENCE CO., IN (1990)" notes that John was a PVT. in the Revolutionary War and was in Captain Samuel Hopkin's Company. Captain Hopkin's Company of the 6th Virginia Infantry during 1777 participated in the Battle Of Germantown and spent the winter in Valley Forge under the command of Colonel John Gibson.
