 Marriage record of John Cann and Sophia Down References
- This is a little difficult to read. They were married 2 July 1854 in the Parish Church of Sampford Spinney, Devon. It provides the names of John’s father, William, and Sophia’s father, Henry. Note that John and Sophia could not write – they signed with an X. The witnesses are interesting: Peter Mortimore – Sophia’s mother’s maiden name was Maryann Mortimore but I have no record of a brother Peter. Also, Jane Down could be Sophia’s sister but I have no record of her. John and his daughter Sarah came to America in 1879. John and Sophia’s daughter Elizabeth married Thomas Henry Dawe and they came to America in 1880 along with the family of John’s brother George Alfred Cann, and Sophia with her children – 19 of them in steerage class. John and Sophia’s son William, an infant, died during the voyage. (from Steve, 2nd great grandson of John and Sophia)
