John Sr's patriarch name is believed to be Bell. However; he was supposedly adopted by a family of the Hickey surname, according to tale. This could, however, be a mishap regarding his son John, leaving his son to truly be the subject of adoption. Both of John Sr's parents are unknown by name, but, it's widely believed that either he or his father, supposedly a ship man and immigrant to the colonies, died at sea crossing the Atlantic either to or from Scotland.

Catherine's maiden surname may or mayn't actually be Bard... This could be the possible surname of a second undiscovered or unaccounted spouse. If Bard is her actual maiden surname, than it may be that she married second perhaps to a Hickey, possibly the true source for the Hickey surname. John died in about 1752, but she lived on to 1817. Their only known child, John: born in about 1750, took on the Hickey surname without doubt.
