John Barnes was born in Wilkes County, North Carolina in 1804. He moved to Valley Head in DeKalb County, Alabama about 1835, with his brother Jehu or Jaheu. During the Civil War he was a Southern Union Loyalist. He did not was his sons fighting in the war, especially on the side of the South.
