    John Artman, Jr. married Elizabeth “Betsy” DeWitt on 24 September 1801 in Bartons Run, Hardin County, Kentucky.

    “Know all men by these presents that we John Artman and Elisha Dewitt are hereto and firmly bound unto his Excellency James Garrard, Esquire, Governor of Kentucky in the full and just amount of fifty pounds current money to be paid to the said Governor and his successors to which payment well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves and our heirs jointly and severally, firmly be these presents sealed with our seals and dated 24th day of September 1801.

    “The condition of the above obligation is such that should there be no legal cause to obstruct a marriage shortly intended to be solemnized between the above bound John Artman and Betsy DeWitt, daughter of Elisha DeWitt.”
