[Note: Joel Dayton Jr's father Joel Dayton Sr. b. 1775 Brookhaven, Suffolk Co, NY, directly descends from line of Ralph Dayton (Immigrant), b 1588 Ashford, Kent, England d. 1658 Southhampton, Long Island, Suffolk, NY m. Alice Goldhatch. . By 1650 he had settled in East Hampton, Long Island NY. There he was appointed agent to the Connecticut Colony in 1651. He was also chosen for constable 7 Oct 1651. Their son Samuel Dayton, b 1623 Ashford, Kent, who also came w/ his father and settled in Brookhaven, Suffolk, Long Island, NY, and is buried at Old Burying Ground in Southold, Suffolk, NY (Findagrave # 159491024).] engaged in the whaling industry, and in 1675 was selling barrels of whale oil at 'Fireplace' (an area just east of Dayton's Neck). In the 1670s English whale hunters in Southampton and East Hampton were no longer waiting on shore for whales. They formed whaling companies, hired Shinnecock and Montaukett Indian whalers, and began launching whaleboats off these beaches to hunt the North Atlantic right whales.]
