Rockbridge County, Virginia - Marriage Bond dated 14 March 1797 (from original record):

"James McKEE and William Makey, bondsmen, $150, on marriage of JAMES McKEE and JEAN REED. Signed: James J.(?) McKee, William Makey."

"JOSEPH and MARY REED consent to marriage of daughter Jean."

Note: Joseph REED's wife was Mary McCLURE, daughter of Nathaniel McCLURE who died 1761 Augusta Co., Virginia.

Joseph and Mary's daughter Jean/Jane REED was underage in 1797 and had to have the consent of her parents to marry James McKEE, so she was born c. 1777 or later.

Jean/Jane REED's husband James McKEE was born c. 1765-1775, judging by census records. He purchased land along Mill Creek in the "Big Calf Pasture" of Bath County, Virginia, in 1809, and died in 1818 in Bath County.

Jean (Reed) McKEE's will was written 5 December 1820 and probated at June court 1821 (Source: Bath County, Virginia, Will Book 2, page 335). Among children named was son Hugh McKEE, my ancestor.

Hugh McKEE (1801 Botetourt Co., Virginia-1863 Butler Co., Alabama) married Sarah Adeline BLANKENSHIP in 1823 in Bath Co., VA (daughter of John Blankenship & Nancy Houchins) and settled in Butler County, Alabama, as did the Blankenships.
